1979 Epiphone Genesis Custom vs 1980 Epiphone Genesis Custom

Los primeros prototipos de la Epiphone Genesis fueron contruidos a mano por Jim Walker en persona con la ayuda de su viejo amigo y mentor John Montgomery, en el mismo taller donde  juntos habian construido años antes las tan afamadas guitarras Hamer, ellos fueron   pioneros en el mundo de los instrumentos "boutique" hoy mas conocidos como "Custom Shop"

 

Estos prototipos fueron "mapeados" por la gente del R&D  en la planta  de Gibson  y se enviaron los planos a Japon, por esos dias la produccion de Epiphone tenia base en la planta de Matsumoku.

En 1979 se produjeron las primeras Genesis en Japon bajo la supervision de Shiro Arai,
quien  era nada mas y nada menos que el fundador Aria,  el fue el encargado de construir  algunas unidades de la nueva guitarra  con la que  planeaban  impulsar a  la marca Epiphone en el mundo de las guitarras electricas solidas.

Por  ese entonces en japon las guitarras se construian en forma mayormente artesanal, con materias primas muy nobles y con una excelente calidad de terminacion,   la calidad de la mano de obra japonesa en materia de guitarras electricas   por ese entonces es algo que hoy despierta gran admiracion entre los conocedores.

Luego de haber producido unas pocas unidades en Japon, por temas de coste  se decide que la produccion masiva de la Genesis tendria lugar  en la  recientemente inaugurada planta de la firma japonesa  Pearl Drums en Taiwan, esta era la  mas moderna planta de la firma y contaba con la mas alta tecnologia y maquinarias traidas desde Japon,  en esta  planta  fue donde se produjo la mas exitosa serie de baterias Pearl  la afamada  "Export Series"

Los primeros protototipos de la Genesis  son  diferentes a las unidades producidas en masa en la  fabrica de Pearl en Taiwan.

Como podemos ver en las fotos de los catalogos japoneses de 1979 hay ciertas caracteristicas que diferencian  a las Genesis japonesas de las unidades de produccion fabricadas por Pearl en Taiwan

Como podemos ver a simple vista en la foto del  catalogo en  la edicion japonesa de la Genesis estas eran identicas a los prototipos contruidos por Jim Walker

 Los microfonos, (pickups) son humbuckers cubiertos, y las perillas  son estilo "Top Hut" con las palabras "Tone"  y "Volume"  al estilo de las Gibson y Epiphone de los años 60.

Estas especificaciones son diferentes a las de las Genesis de produccion construidas por Pearl en Taiwan que venian con humbucker descubiertos y perillas tipo "Speed" como vemos en el anuncio publicitario de abajo.

Es importante destacar que el 99% de las Epiphone Genesis  que podemos encontrar son de este tipo

  las fabricadas por Pearl.

Pero la principal diferencia radica en las dimensiones del instrumento y no en los aspectos esteticos.

 

Como antes mencione lo primero que notamos en la  1979 Custom es que tiene humbuckers cubiertos y las  perillas top hut  ademas el hardware en la custom 1979 es cromo.

 Estas diferencias podrian ser producto de haber  sido customizada o personalizada asi que

 para saber su procendencia debemos comparar otros detalles mas importatntes que no puedan ser alterados luego.

Como se puede ver en las siguentes fotos el perfil del mastil es muy diferente, 

la custom 1979  tienen el mastil mucho mas grueso.

Los indicadores de color verde superpuestos son exactamente del mismo tamaño en ambas guitarras.

el tacto de un mastil y el otro es completamente diferente, 

el "feel" de la Custom 79 es incomparable, se siente como dicen los americanos "como un bate de baseball"

mas al estilo de las Les Paul de los 50

en la version fabricada por Pearl el mastil se siente mas plano mas como una Les Paul de fines de los 60 o los  70.

Viendola desde arriba  tambien se nota la diferencia en el cuerpo

la version 1979  japonesa es mas gruesa la de produccion taiwanesa es bastante mas delgada. 

 

 

Otra diferencia fundamental pero que no se puede ver a simple vista es que en la edicion Japonesa el mastil es de 1 sola pieza.

mientras que en la version de produccion el mastil y el calvijero son 2 piezas separadas.

Espero  esta data les sirva para no dejarse engañar, ya que la mayoria de las veces  aparece  una Epiphone Genesis en venta suele decirse que es "japonesa" cuando en relidad no lo es. 

Es importante destacar que las Genesis de produccion,  es decir las fabricadas por Pearl  en Taiwan tenian exactamente las mismas especificaciones durante los 3 años de produccion (1979-1980-1981)

es decir que poseen las mismas medidas tanto en el cuerpo y en los mastiles.

y esa es tal vez la diferencia mas inportantes con las primeras pocas unidades contruidas en Japon.

Espero que leyendo atentamente este articulo todos pudan  aprender a diferenciarlas para que no puedan ser engañados por vendedores deshonestos.

Epiphone Genesis 2013 Limited Edition

Finalmente despues de 34 años La Epiphone Genesis vuelve a la vida.
Epiphone Genesis Deluxe PRO Custom Shop Limited Edition

Algo que hace tan solo 2 o 3 años atras hubiera parecido una locura.
La Epiphone Genesis vuelve como una "Edicion Limitada"  de tan solo 500 unidades por cada color.

Black Cherry (BC), Midnight Ebony (ME), Midnight Sapphire (MS), Vintage Sunburst (VS)

Esta nueva version de la Epiphone Genesis cuenta con varias diferencias con las originales, por ejemplo el mastil es mas delgado, del tipo Slim 60s uno de los mas populares entre los consumidores de la marca en la actualidad.

El modelo ha sido denominado "Deluxe Pro" y al igual que las viejas Deluxe cuenta con Inlays en forma trapezoidal, aunque carecen del hermoso binding en la pala  que traian  las Deluxe originales.

La guitarra viene equipada con los mejores pickups que fabrica Epiphone, los Probucker en sus versiones 2 y 3 estos son la version Epiphone de los tan afamados Gibson Burstbucker 

 El mic del puente viene levemente sobrebobinado lo que le da mayor potencia de salida y cuentan con la opcion de usarlos tanto en doble bobina como  "spliteados",  esta era  una de las caracteristicas mas notables de la vieja Genesis, en la cual se spliteaban ambos mics con un mini switch, en esta  nueva version , el split-coil se activa mediante los 2 potenciometros Puss/pull ubicados en los controles de volumen de la guitarra, en  lo que le da la posibilidad de splietear los 2 mics independientemente expandiendo mas aun la posibilidades sonoras de la guitarra.

La nueva Genesis 2013 trae 4 periillas en lugar de 3, agregando un tono mas aumentando el

La Epiphone Genesis en esta nueva version viene equipada con clavijas Grover y con  puente  Lock Tone.

tambien vienen con una fina capa de Arce Flameado AAA en la tapa lo que le da un bonito acabado y trastera de Rosewood.

Tambien existe la opcion de adquirirla con  Estuche Rigido Reissue Limited Edition.

Aparentemente casi toda la produccion ya esta vendida a los pocos dias de salido a la venta y pareciera ser que al dia de la fecha quedan muy pocas en stock.

Todos sabemos la increible diferencia que existen entre las viejas Epiphone y las actuales,

cualquiera que haya tenido una Epiphone de la segunda mitad de los 70, o principios de los 80,   la epoca en que las Genesis originales fueron diseñadas y fabricadas, conoce  la diferencias entre las Epiphone de hoy y aquellas antiguas bellezas, tal vez las mas cercanas en calidad eran  las ya descontinuadas Elitist, que se dejaron de fabricar en 2008.

 Hoy Epiphone solo fabrica instrumetos para jovenes principiantes y esa es una realidd.

 No creo que esta nueva version de la Genesis logre escapar de eso.

Pero por solo 500 dolares seguramente en una buena opcion dentro de ese segmento de guitarras.

Ojala si esta tuviese exito este modelo, como aparentemente esta teniendo, seria hermoso si algun dia vuelvan a fabricar una serie Elitist de produccion  Japonesa , claro esta,  y que exista  una Version Epiphone Genesis Custom Elitist.

Creo que esa si seguramente podria estar a la altura una Epiphone Genesis vintage

Epiphone Genesis Custom 1980 "La Burst"

I'm really excited because after years of waiting, I finally purchased my second Epiphone Genesis Custom.
It's a nice 1980/81 unit
This guitar was built in the Pearl Drums factory and the hardware is completely original and in perfect condition.

I purchases on Ebay and was quite worried, but was pleasantly surprised when I got in my home, and see what was in excellent shape.

The first thing I noticed was that the PUs were not the original and my curiosity was kindled.. i remove the screws to see what it was and remains PUs pleasantly surprised to see that they were a pair of Schaller Golden 50 (Made in Germany) beautiful tone PAF

Then, i remove the back cover to wath the electronics, and again WOW! the pots were not the originals.
instead has 3 Push/Pull pots, incredible!

For a guitar that already versatile, the addition of the push/pull pots makes it even more versatile.

i could not ask for more ...

Bueno muchachos aqui les dejo una fotos de mi nueva nena, es una hermosa

Epiphone Genesis Custom 1980, la verdad me tiene enamorado, la compre sin probarla asi que estaba bastante nervioso, pero cuando llego y vi que estaba en perfectas condiciones me puse mas que contento.
despues de 20 años de tener mi Geni y que nunca me falle es un gran placer tener otra mas para que le haga compañia.



Lo primero que note al verla de cerca es que no tenia los mics originales,
como la curiosidad me mataba afloje las cuerdas y saque el PU del puente...
mas que grata sorpresa al ver que los mic son unos Schaller Golden 50, made in germany, un caño,
hermoso tono PAF, estos mic equiparon a las Heritage durante muchos años.
Igualmente junto con la viola compre un hermoso set de Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded ( JB + Jazz) que proximamente estare instalando en ella.
Despues de chequear los PU paso obligado sacarle la tapa de atras para ver los potes...
Wow! otra grata sorpresa!!! los potes tampoco eran los stock, en su lugar tiene 3 potes Push-pull!!!
que mas puedo pedir, para una guitarra ya de por si versatil la adicion de 3 push/pull le da mas versatilidad aun.
En esta version tanto el hardware como el resto de los materias primas como las maderas y los inlays tambien venian de Japon. El rosewood es un poco mas claro que en mi otra Genesis.

La verdad estoy mas que contento, estoy muy muy feliz con mi nueva nena, y realmente estoy fascinado con el efecto que produce la luz en la madera, es una especie de flameado que cuando moves la viola cambia la forma y se ve diferente, depende del angulo en que la mires el dibujo cambia. muy bonita realmente.

The designer of the Epiphone Genesis talks about the creative process and much more.

After years of searching I have finally been able to cross a few words with Jim Walker the designer of the Epiphone Genesis. First of all I thank you kindly answer some questions and i must say i found a very humble and nice person.

Jim Walker began his career in the world of guitars with his friend John Montgomery  building guitars in his  basement workshop for the Guitar shop owned by Paul Hamer and Jol Dantzig, the guitars they built  was the first units of the glorious Hamer guitars. The pioneer in the world of  the "boutique" guitars.

John Montgomery and Jim Walker built  together the exquisite guitars that gave fame to the  Hamer brand. As we all know the Hamer guitars were constructed  entirely  hand-made  with the most  finest materials and trying to capture the spirit of vintage guitars from the 50s,  and guitarists of  major bands like Cheap Trick, Jethro Tull, The Police, and Gary Moore were his main customers. This is  how Jim Walker started , building  guitars  of the most exquisite quality.

In 1977 Jim Walker start to work for  Gibson Guitar Corporation as Director of Marketing and was during that period he designed the Epiphone Genesis Series.

 Tell me some words about the Geni, the design process...

what do you looking for?

Jim Walker:
I designed this series roughly around the same time that I designed the Presentation series. I was looking to upgrade the entire Epiphone to something more contemporary and functional.

you have some inspiration?

A part of the inspiration was that sales on the entire line were falling off, particularly the bolt-on neck FT series of acoustics, which had served the company well for many, many years, but their time had come. I wanted the line to regain the respect that it once had.

What do you mean this guitar for you?

The Genesis series is one that I will always have a warm feeling about. I tried at the time to put a lot of thought into it , and make it something that would begin to build a bridge for Epiphone into a new era.

Ever imagine that 30 years after being discontinued would be something of a "cult" guitar for some people?

Never in my wildest dreams. It’s very heartwarming.

What do you feel about?

I wish I had one. I had two of the prototypes, one bass and one guitar, which were in storage for a period of time, and they were both stolen.

where it was designed?

I designed Genesis at a dear friend’s guitar shop Jhon Montgomery.
 Before I came to Gibson/Epiphone, he and I worked there together, building the very first Hamer guitars.

The 1st prototype (the original one) where it was built?

 I built the first 4 prototypes, 3 guitars and 1 bass in that same guitar shop.


Some people says that all the Genesis guitars  was built in Taiwan, other people (like me) think the very first was built in Japan,  what do you know about this?

I sent the blueprints,  which were rendered at the Gibson-Kalamazoo plant from the prototypes,   for all the Genesis series first to Shiro Arai.  (Aria guitars Japan ) 
I got back some really wonderful samples,
They were gorgeous!  I also sent blueprints to Nanyo Boeki.(Nagoya Japan)  
However, because of the really turbulent Yen/Dollar exchange rate at the time, we couldn’t proceed with that plan. So, the Genesis series went into production at the Pearl factory in Taichung, Taiwan.


One of the reasons that was possible is because Pearl had brought in a good deal of Japanese production equipment. They were also held to basically Gibson quality standards.

I had also recently opened up a quality control facility in the Seattle area for the entire Epiphone line, where all instruments were received, and QC’d one more time before shipment to our retailers. This significantly reduced returns for the entire line.

The low sales was the real reason to discountinue the model? or the yen crisis 81/82 was the real reason?

It was really a combination of the two … bad timing in a way. There was a period of time when we were adjusting prices for the entire Epiphone line on a regular 3-6 month basis, which was not very retailer-friendly to say the least.


Tell me about you, what was doing JIm Walker today.
What you have done after the epiphone genesis?

Since leaving Gibson/Epiphone, I have not been in the music industry. My career has been spent in marketing and communications in a number of different industries. Today, I have my own business that provides these kinds of services on a project basis. I have enjoyed continuing to learn along the way. Almost everything that I do for a client, I do entirely myself: music, graphics, video, layout, editing … everything. I like keeping my hands on it.

Its really really amazing....
This model was sleeping for 33 years, almost forgotten,  and now come back to the life!!!
After over a year on the drawing boards one of the prototypes come out.

Looks good! ...but will pass the test of the lovers of this vintage jewels?

The costruction methods are change,  the  beloved quiality of the originals Genesis still remains on this "Reissue" model??

Will be a difficult challenge for the people of Epiphone.

A first view looks good, the top was a nice flame finish  but...

Legendary alternative rock band "Sonic Youth" auctioned his Epiphone Genesis to help those affected by the recent tsunami in Japan.

For  who do not know, this band was a pioneer in the "alternative" rock sound of  the 80s and 90s and were the leading exponent of "Noise" movement, inspiring countless musicians and influencing many bands, helping to shape what later became known as "grunge" sound, with Kurt Cobain, leader of Nirvana, like one of his more renowned fans.
Sonic Youth was formed  in 1981 and has over 17 studio albums, 7 extendemd plays, 3 compilation albums, plus a significant number of singles and music videos.

One of the most important albums of the newyorker  band  "Daydream Nation"  of 1988,  which was chosen by Rollingstone magazine as one of the best albums of the 80's and today is considered a "cult album"  where this record are several of the greatest songs of the band.
The track No. 4,  the unforgettable  "Cross the Breeze"  one of the  most acclaimed songs  by the  fans was recorded with an Epiphone Genesis Custom (80/81)  black finish, in the hands of Thurston Moore.
Later  the same guitar was used by the other guitarist of the band,  Lee Ronaldo in the video of  "Dirty Boots" opening track of the album  "Goo" which went on sale in 1990, perhaps the time of most popularity of the band arround the world..
This is the guitar to be auctioned along with some other objects of the band.
It is important to mention that the guitar was hard hit in one of the shows of the band (a grunge custom ) and it is damaged in the union of the body with the neck.
This damage is easily repairable,  so the lucky to take this beauty will not just be an excellent guitar but also a piece of  history.

La legendaria banda del Rock Alternativo "Sonic Youth" subastara su Epiphone Genesis para ayudar a los damnificados por el reciente tsunami ocurrido en Japon.
Para los que no la conocen, esta banda fue una de las pioneras en el sonido del rock "alternativo" de los 80 y 90s y  fueron el principal exponente  del  "Noise",  inspirando a un sin numero de musicos e influenciando a muchas bandas, ayudando a darle forma a lo que despues se conocio como sonido "grunge" , siendo Kurt Cobain,  lider de Nirvana,  uno de sus mas renombrados admiradores.

Es importante mencionar que la guitarra fue fuertemente golpeada en uno de los shows de la banda (una costumbre muy grunge) y la  misma se encuentra dañada en la union del cuerpo con el mastil.
Este daño es facilmente reparable por lo que el afortudando que se lleve esta belleza no solo tendra una excelente guitarra sino tambien un pedazo de historia.

 

 

Genesis Reissue???

Apparently the growing popularity of the Genesis is making to the Epiphone people think  about  an a "reissue" of the model.
For all the fans of this instrument is great news, just hope the "reissue" keeps  the original quality.
 It is known for anyone that Epiphone guitars currently do not have the quality of the old Epiphone Americans and some Japanese series,  and are now simply clones of models manufactured by Gibson,  geared to satisfy the demand of the young apprentices that beginning in the guitar world and they can access a models that looking like a real Gibson but with a much lower price.
As everyone knows this was not always so, Epiphone  built excellent quality  guitars  in their old times,  fighting strongly with Gibson and that was the reason why Gibson bought Epiphone, to eliminate one of its fiercest competitors.
We hope  that people of  Epiphone respect the logo carrying their instruments, and build a real quality guitar like in the "olds times"  and this model rekindle the flame of the construction of "original designs"  and not just cheap copies of Gibson.

Aparentemente la creciente popularidad de la Genesis esta haciendo pensar a la gente de Epiphone en reeditar el modelo.
Para todos los amates de este intrumento es una gran noticia, solo esperemos que la "reedicion" este a la altura de las originales, es sabido que actualmente las guitarras Epiphone no tienen la calidad de las viejas epiphone americanas y algunas japonesas y son hoy simplemente modelos clones de los fabricados por Gibson, pero orientados  para satisfacer la demanda de los jovenes aprendices que se incian en el camino de la guitarra y puedad acceder a un modelo visualmente similar a una verdadera Gibson pero con un precio mucho menor.
Como todos saben esto no siempre fue asi,  Epiphone construia guitarras de una calrdad excelente es sus viejas epocas,  que rivalizaban fuertemente con Gibson y ese fue el motivo por el cual Gibson compro Epiphone , para eliminar uno de sus mas ferreos competidores.
Espermos que la gente de Epiphone haga honor a ese logo que llevan sus intrumentos y contruyan una guitarra de la calidad que supo poner en alto a esta firma y con este modelo reavive la llama de la contruccion de modelos originales y no solo copias baratas de Gibson.

Real Epiphone Genesis 1979

How to recognize a real  79 Epiphone Genesis -------------------------------------------------------------

Searching on the web I've noticed that everyone who sells an Epiphone Genesis says

 "1979 Genesis made in japan" and when you look at the photo is clearly not true. 

only a few units was produced in Japan by Shiro Arai founder of Aria.

Thats is the reason to make this new post, so everyone can know the differences between a

1979 Japan Genesis and the normal Genesis  made by Pearl  in Taiwan.

In the pictures of the 1979 japan catalog we can see  the 3 models of Genesis (japan edition)

Let's see the differences between the Epiphone Genesis Custom 79 (Japan)  and 80/81 (Taiwan)

The main differences are:


1 -The  Knobs.
The 1979 Genesis  came with  Golden "Top-Hut"  style knobs with VOLUME & TONE

The Taiwan  units came with  "Speed" style knobs




2-The Pickups
The 1979 Japan Genesis came with covered  pickups (chrome)

The Taiwan units came with "exposed" pickups and  gold magnetic elements







3 - The Hardware.
The 79 came with  silver bridge and chrome hardware and tuners have a golden circle on the back.

The 80/81 came with gold hardware




On the back of the tailpiece appears the leyend  "JAPAN"

4 - Wiring.
The 79 japan  came wired with cables from the renowned Japanese brand "Mogami"

Mogami continues to manufacture high quality cables for all types of audio-related functions, are currently employed in the contruction of Recording Consoles and major studios such as "Sony" or "Warner Bros" are wired with Mogami cables.


 

The 80/81 taiwan have generic wired



5 - The Case.

Hopefully this will help people not fall into the trap,

 I have seen many Epiphone Genesis on E-bay or Graiglist  or also in Mercado Libre (Arg Chile. Brazil, etc) where sellers seeking to deceive potential buyers saying that guitar they sell is from 1979 and made in Japan

 Do not be fooled!
